Shireen Abu Akleh: the evidence pointed to the soldiers' position

Shireen Abu Akleh was wearing a helmet and a vest marked PRESS when she was shot in Jenin refugee camp on 11 May 2022. She had been reporting on an Israeli military raid. Her colleague Ali Sammoudi was wounded.

Six weeks later, the UN Human Rights Office published the result of its monitoring. Investigators had inspected the scene, reviewed photographs, video and audio, consulted experts, examined official communications and interviewed witnesses.[1] Their conclusion was that the fatal shots came from Israeli Security Forces, not indiscriminate firing by armed Palestinians.[2]

That finding answered the direction of fire. It did not identify an individual shooter or decide criminal intent. Israel later said there was a high possibility Abu Akleh had been accidentally hit by Israeli fire. No prosecution followed.[3]

A press vest is not a force field. Its purpose is identification: it tells every armed actor that the person wearing it is a civilian doing work protected by law. When a journalist so marked is killed, an internal review cannot be the end of the process. The evidence must be preserved, the shooter identified and the decision to fire tested independently.
